Name Scope rows with bSDD classifications

Search the buildingSMART Data Dictionary as you type in Scope, so every row gets its name and code from the classification standard you choose.

Contents

Plannerly is connected to the buildingSMART Data Dictionary (bSDD), buildingSMART's online library of classifications, properties and their definitions, published by the people who write each standard. Choose the classification your project follows and Plannerly searches it as you type in Scope, so every row gets its name and code straight from the standard - no copying from spreadsheets, no typos.

TL;DR: In the project's Settings, open Project, then Standards, and choose a bSDD Classifications Dictionary. Then type at least three characters in a Scope row's title and pick a suggestion.

1. Choose your dictionaries

  1. Open the project and choose Settings on the project dashboard (the sliders icon, "Manage project details and settings").
  2. Open the Project tab and go to Standards.
  3. Choose the bSDD Classifications Dictionary for your Scope rows - Uniclass, ETIM, IFC, NL-SfB, CCI and hundreds more are listed, each with its version.
  4. If you also want standard names for your information requirements, choose a bSDD Information Requirements Dictionary too. It can be the same dictionary or a different one.

Changing these settings needs permission to manage the project. The same section holds the Project Standard and the Classification Coding Style: Concatenated Hierarchy for codes that build on their parent (A, A10, A1010), or Non-Concatenated Hierarchy for systems whose levels have their own codes.

2. Name Scope rows as you type

  1. In Scope, start typing a row's title.
  2. After three characters, Plannerly searches the dictionary you chose and lists matching classifications with their code and name.
  3. Pick one. The row takes the standard's name and code, and keeps a link back to the bSDD entry.

Information requirements work the same way: the Information Requirements dictionary suggests names when you add a requirement, so property names match the standard too. To see which rows are linked to the bSDD, switch on bSDD Indicator in Scope's view preferences.

3. Add a subtitle and entity type

Every row also has two optional fields for anything the classification itself doesn't say:

  • Subtitle - a second line under the title, such as a short description.
  • Entity Type - for example the Revit category or IFC entity the row's elements belong to. Plannerly suggests values as you type.

Edit both from the row's edit window (Title, Subtitle, Code, Type and Entity Type), and show them on the grid with the Subtitles and Entity Types view preferences.

Questions about bSDD classifications

Why don't I see any suggestions when I type?

Check that a bSDD Classifications Dictionary is chosen in Settings, under Project and Standards, and type at least three characters. If the dictionary service is busy, Plannerly says so - try again in a moment.

Does choosing a dictionary change the rows I already have?

No. Existing names and codes stay as they are. The dictionary is used for the rows you name from now on.

Can I use one standard for Scope and another for requirements?

Yes. The Classifications and Information Requirements dictionaries are separate settings, so each can follow a different standard.

Is the bSDD free to use in Plannerly?

The bSDD is an open service from buildingSMART International, and searching it is built into Plannerly. Each dictionary shows its own licence on the bSDD.
