Plannerly turns a checked model into a COBie handover file. You set out the asset information you need in Scope, Verify checks the model against it, and the Export menu writes it all into one Excel workbook: COBie's Contact and Facility sheets, plus your model's assets and their handover data.
Before you start
- Scope is switched on in the project, with at least one milestone. Without a milestone, Handover Data tells you it needs one.
- Your model is connected to Verify, so Plannerly can read its elements and their properties. See linking your ACC or BIM 360 account.
- The information you want handed over is set out as information requirements in Scope. Give the COBie fields the requirement type COBie so you can export them on their own. To start from an existing set, see importing scope from a template or another project.
Create the COBie handover file
- Open the project and choose Export. It's on the project dashboard, and the export icon in Scope and Verify opens the same menu.
- Choose Handover Data ("Create an Excel file with model data for handover - eg. COBie!").
- Pick the model version you want to report from.
- Narrow it down if you need to. You can filter by work package, requirement type (choose COBie for just the COBie fields), team, milestone, team member and folder. With RACI switched on, you can filter by role too.
- Two options are there if you want them. Split sheets by Tag gives each tag its own sheet, and Add Quality Checking Columns adds each value's checking result from Verify.
- Type a title and choose Create.
Plannerly saves the workbook (.xlsx) in File Manager, ready to download, share or send for review. Run it again whenever the model changes - each export reads the model version you pick.
What's in the file
- Contact and Facility sheets, laid out for COBie.
- A Handover Data sheet with one row per model element and a column for each information requirement - or one sheet per tag when you split by tag.
- With quality checking columns, the result of each check beside its value, so gaps are easy to spot before you hand over.
COBie (Construction Operations Building information exchange) is an open format for handing building asset data to the people who will operate it. The Whole Building Design Guide's COBie pages explain the format in full. Your client's exchange information requirements say which sheets and fields they expect.

How to implement COBie (simply)
How a team defined its handover requirements, checked the model and exported the data in Plannerly.
Recorded in 2023, so a few screens look different now. The steps above are how it works today.

Questions about COBie handover data
Why can't I choose Handover Data?
It needs the Scope module and at least one milestone in the project. Add a milestone in Scope, then open Export again.
Can I choose which properties go into the file?
Yes. The columns come from your information requirements. Filter by requirement type to export only the COBie fields, or by team, milestone, folder or work package to export part of the project.
Can I hand over Excel and COBie in the same file?
Yes. Every Handover Data export is one Excel workbook with the COBie Contact and Facility sheets alongside your assets and their data.
Where do I find the file afterwards?
In File Manager, with the title you gave it. Download it, share it or create it again after the model changes.
